Australian Submarines
I think it's fair to say now that Adelaide is the defence capital of Australia. Many defence organizations are located in my home city of Adelaide where the first 6 Australian Collins class submarines were built. In June 2016, the Australian government committed to the manufacture of another 12 submarines in association with the French company DCNS. These submarines are also to be built here. Like the Collins class before them, the new vessel is to be based on diesel electric propulsion but with the design such that a nuclear reactor can be installed if so desired in the future. The new French short fin Barracuda design employs state of the art capabilities including next generation pump jet propulsion which is much quieter than obsolete propeller technology. Apparently, diesel electic propulsion is better suited to the Pacific environment, partly because it has advantages in green shallow waters along the coastlines. Nuclear is better suited to blue water, open ocean. Below is a slideshow featuring both the Collins and the future Barracuda submarines.
