Biography
VK5 'Short Wave' - Robert Norman
I'm 59 years old, live with my partner Lisette and put up brush fences for a living in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia ( VK5 )...
I operate mainly CW and also the digital modes on the HF bands... CW is an exciting mode and working weak signals in particular can be a thrill as they can be quite readable even though way down at the noise level...
In 1970, at the age of 19, I received my full call - VK5SW - and have been on the HF bands ever since... Due to Power Line Interference in the city over the last few years, it was only recently, when we bought our property near Morgan , that I decided to set up my station in the country... The background noise level is now down to S zero as compared to about S 7 or more in the city... In the summer the noise level can be S9...
When I first started out in Ham Radio, I used to operate from a small shed which I lined and made comfortable in the back yard of my parents' place in Adelaide. I was only 19 and working, so I borrowed the money from the bank and bought a Yaesu FT200, my first radio... The antenna was a Hustler multiband vertical which gave good service for many years... In those days, it was close to a sunspot cycle peak, so signals came through very well... I started out on SSB and some CW and in the early days it was very exciting for me... I used to go down to the shack in the back yard and operate til the early hours of the morning... As time went on, I traded my Yaesu radio for a Kenwood TS520D which was a big improvement although the cross modulation was pretty bad... Antennas were upgraded as the years rolled on and eventually I made a 2 element triband Spider Quad using fibreglass spreaders and put it up on a windmill tower at a height of 30 feet and it worked very well...
PSK31 is a good mode to operate, a little different to the old Creed 7B mechanical teleprinter I used to use on RTTY... It took up a lot of bench space, quite often had to be adjusted for one thing or another and wearing tight fitting headphones was advisable as it was so noisy...
Time marches on and with it, technolgy... Nowadays, anything is possible... From satellites, digital modes, moonbounce to even CW still, there is something for everyone in Ham Radio...
